The world is complicated. Our stories should be too.

Challenging narratives. Changing possibilities.

Who gets to tell the story of Texas? Whose histories are preserved, whose experiences are valued, and whose voices shape our understanding of the present? At IDCL, we believe these questions are fundamental to democracy. Through research, storytelling, and education, we challenge narrow narratives and create space for a more expansive understanding of Texas and its people.

The stories that dominate public life are not neutral. They reflect histories of power and exclusion, shaping whose experiences are recognized, whose voices are heard, and who is understood to belong. We challenge narratives that perpetuate racism, religious intolerance, xenophobia, and other forms of exclusion—and help create space for more truthful, inclusive accounts of our shared lives.

Understanding our increasingly diverse society requires more than familiar narratives and easy answers. We connect scholarship with public life, making research accessible, asking difficult questions, and creating opportunities to think critically about religion, culture, identity, and power.

Expanding Knowledge. Challenging Assumptions.

Building Connections. Expanding Belonging.

Democracy depends on more than shared institutions. It requires relationships, participation, and a commitment to the dignity of others. We bring people together across social, cultural, and religious differences to learn from one another, build community, and strengthen civic life.

The Institute for Diversity and Civic Life (IDCL) is a Texas-based nonprofit working at the intersection of storytelling, public scholarship, and civic engagement. We document overlooked histories, amplify community voices, and create opportunities for learning and connection across differences.

We envision a Texas where everyone has a place in our shared story. And where knowledge, dialogue, and community relationships help us build a more just and democratic future. Through storytelling, research, and education, we're working to make that vision possible.
